The third planet of five orbiting the moderate-sized yellow star Tau Ceti, Kaferia was one of the first non-humanoid civilizations contacted by the Federation.[1] Kaferia preferred to remain independent, but maintained its status as a trusted ally of the Federation.[2] By the early 23rd century, Kaferia boasted a population of 7.2 billion. A race of intelligent insectoids, the Kaferians proceeded to have centuries of profitable trade relations with the Federation; their chief exports were flora and fauna genetically tailored by Kaferian biologists[1] to thrive on colony worlds with demanding climates. Some of their greatest successes were in the areas of food production, yielding many of the most delicious fruits in the known galaxy.[2] Gary Mitchell enjoyed eating Kaferian apples whenever he visited Kaferia.[3]
