Excelsior class[1]

Commissioned October 2280,[2] the Federation Starship Excelsior, known as the "Great Experiment," served as a test-bed for experiments with transwarp drive[3] for several years before the project was ultimately abandoned. Originally under the leadership of Captain Robert Styles,[3] command was later transferred to Captain Hikaru Sulu,[1] who commanded the ship for nine years.[4] In May 2348, the Excelsior was transferred to Starfleet Training Command for use as a training vessel.[5]
