A light year was a unit of measurement, determined by the distance that light can travel in one year in a vacuum, and was a standard unit of distance in astronomy.[1] When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was damaged in an encounter with the Galactic Barrier on Stardate 1312.4, the nearest outpost reachable without warp drive was Delta Vega, less than one light year away: "a few light days away" from the ship's position.[2]
