In the 2240s and '50s, Lieutenant Ben Finney was an instructor at Starfleet Academy, which led to his being "unusually late" in getting a starship assignment. Toward the end of his tenure at the Academy, he befriended several cadets, including Corrigan, Teller, Mike, Timothy, and James T. Kirk. Finney and Kirk became very close, and Finney even named his daughter, Jame, after Kirk. The two later served together aboard the U.S.S. Republic NCC-1371. While aboard the Republic, Kirk relieved Finney on watch and discovered a circuit open to the atomic matter pile, which endangered the ship. Kirk closed the circuit and logged the incident, for which Finney drew a reprimand and was sent to the bottom of the promotions list. Finney blamed Kirk for the incident, and his anger and resentment toward Kirk festered over the years. By 2267, Finney, now a lieutenant commander, was assigned as records officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, now commanded by Kirk. On Stardate 2945.7, Finney faked his death during an ion storm, and manipulated the ship's computer records to implicate Kirk in the incident. Kirk drew a court martial, during which Finney's plot was exposed, thanks to intervention by Commander Spock. With Jame's help, they convinced Finney to undo the damage he had done to the ship, and to turn himself in. Kirk's attorney for the court martial, Samuel Cogley, agreed to take on Finney's defense, and was confident that he would win that case as well.[1]
