On 18 May 2156, a fleet of five Romulan warbirds under the command of Admiral Mindar entered the Algeron system. The Columbia NX-02, under the command of Fleet Captain Erika Hernandez, and the Excalibur, under the command of Captain Bran Stiles, immediately saw that they were hopelessly outmatched. The Romulans were jamming all communications, so Hernandez ordered Stiles to retreat and warn Starfleet Command. Stiles was reluctant to leave Columbia alone to defend the base, but followed his orders. Two of the Romulan ships broke off from the attack to pursue Excalibur, while Columbia fought the remaining three. Excalibur could not escape the pursuing Romulan ships' jamming, however. The ship's lone survivor, first officer Commander Bryce Shumar, relayed what happened in an oral history of the war published on its fifth anniversary. As the Excalibur approached the Gamma Hydra system, Stiles ordered his science officer to scan ahead for any comet of magnitude five or greater. Shumar was launched with a subspace relay buoy in a shuttlepod and ordered to avoid detection in the tail of the comet, while Excalibur warped away in a different direction. Once the Romulans had been successfully led away, Shumar launched the buoy and contacted Starfleet. Two days later, he was rescued by the Enterprise NX-01, when he learned that Excalibur had been destroyed.^[1]
