Construction on the Federation Starship Achernar, the first of the Achernar class (a variant of the Constitution class), was authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 5930.[1] The Achernar became operational on Reference Stardate 1/9509 (September 2195). A very successful design, 68 Achernar class vessels were authorized, and the class saw extensive combat during the Four Years War. Nearly all that survived the war were destroyed in weapons testing as part of Star Fleet's post-war demilitarization program.[2]
