Vanderberg was the chief engineer of the mining colony on Janus VI in 2267. After fifty miners were killed by an unknown creature, he sent out a distress signal that was answered by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. When Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew determined that the creature was actually a sentient being called a Horta, and its attacks were in retaliation for the destruction of the eggs that she was protecting, an accord was reached and all of the newly-hatched Horta began to work for the mine, digging tunnels to help clear the way to valuable deposits of pergium, uranium, platinum, gold, and more.[1]
