A cloaking device allowed a ship to become invisible to both visible light as well as to sensors. Most Romulan and some Klingon vessels were equipped with cloaking devices in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. While the cloaking device was useful as a defensive tool, it used so much energy that weapons, shields, tractor beams, and transporters were unable to be used while it was active.[1]
