On 10 January 2160, the Defiant and the Enterprise NX-01, leading a Coalition of Planets task force, set course for Cheron, with a mission to destroy the Romulan shipyards located there. The Battle of Cheron, as it came to be known, was actually a feint, distracting the bulk of the Romulan fleet away from Romulus, while it was attacked by a second force led by the Lexington after receiving a signal from Admiral Avram Gardner, aboard the Defiant. After the Defiant was destroyed, Enterprise and the rest of the task force would surely have been destroyed as well, had the Romulan forces not retreated to defend their homeworld.[1][2]

On 10 January 2160, the Defiant, the Atlantis NX-05, and the Enterprise NX-01 set course for Cheron, with a mission to destroy the Romulan shipyards located there. The Battle of Cheron, as it came to be known, was actually a feint, distracting the bulk of the Romulan fleet away from Romulus, while it was attacked by a force led by the Lexington after receiving a signal from Admiral Avram Gardner, aboard the Defiant. After the Defiant was destroyed, Atlantis and Enterprise would surely have been destroyed as well, had the Romulan forces not retreated to defend their homeworld.[1]
On Reference Stardate 1/0905.01 (1 May 2109), the Battle of Cheron was fought in Romulan space between two squadrons of Federation ships and remnants of four Romulan groups. After "five stardates of continuous conflict," the battle ended inconclusively when neither side had any combat-capable ships remaining. Admiral Alex Hamilton, commanding the Federation Strike Force from the Marshall class U.S.S. Hannibal, however, declares that the Battle of Cheron was "the final and decisive engagement" of the Romulan War. The battle marks the Federation's last opportunity to organize a fleet strong enough to reach the supposed location of the Romulan homeworld. It is nevertheless considered a victory, as the Romulans lose more ships than the Federation does.[3][4]
