On Reference Stardate 1/0805.02 (2 May 2108), a Romulan armada of 60 ships headed for the Triangle attacked three Federation squadrons near Gamma Hydra, which had been tipped off to the Romulans' movements by Star Fleet Intelligence Command's Operation Brutus. Though Federation forces were substantially outnumbered, casualties were extremely heavy on both sides. Star Fleet's new tactics matched Romulan ferocity, leaving both fleets badly depleted and exhausted. The Romulans forced a Federation retreat, and they resumed course for the Triangle. The 132nd Strike Squadron, under the command of Admiral William Larson, reinforced the battered Federation forces and repulsed the Romulan armada. This battle seriously weakened Star Fleet, but it also prevented the formation of a major Romulan fleet in the Triangle. Excluding isolated, small-scale engagements, the Triangle remained free of a Romulan presence for the remainder of the war.[1]
