Stardate 4372.5: Kirk is distracted while the Enterprise is threatened.
Though the Tellun system's two planets, Elas and Troyius, are both Federation members, they have been at war with one another for centuries. Due to recent Klingon interest in the area, it is imperative that the two worlds now make peace. The Enterprise is assigned to transport Elaan, the Dohlman of Elas, to Troyius for her marriage to the planet's leader. Elaan is arrogant and seems to be ignorant of the marriage's importance. Petri, the Troyian ambassador attempting to teach Troyian social graces to Elaan, is stabbed by the Dohlman. The future of the marriage, the alliance, and the ultimate fate of the Tellun system are all at stake as Kirk attempts to educate Elaan. The captain's task is complicated not only by her reluctance, but also Elasian body chemistry: her tears contain a chemical intoxicant, causing Kirk to fall in love with her. Meanwhile, a Klingon vessel threatening the Enterprise is aided by Kryton, a member of the Dohlman's party. He sabotages the ship's power by fusing the dilithium crystals before commiting suicide. Kirk discovers that Elaan's jewelry is composed of dilithium crystals, a fact that explains the Klingons' interest in her planet and enables the Enterprise to turn the tables on the Klingon ship. Charmed by Kirk, Elaan determines to succeed in her mission to unite Elas and Troyius, and the captain frees himself from Elaan's spell by remembering that his first love is the Starship Enterprise.
