In the early 22nd Century, Captain William Gustavus Larson commanded the Horizon class cruiser U.S.S. Excelsior. On Reference Stardate 1/0408.16 (16 August 2104), two Romulan U-9 class cruisers attacked and destroyed a group of small asteroid mining outposts near Sigma Cancri. Shortly thereafter, they confronted the Excelsior and the Matador, another Horizon class cruiser. In a bitter dogfight, one Romulan ship was destroyed and the other disengaged, while the Matador was severely damaged. This skirmish was considered to be a Federation victory in the years leading up to the Romulan War.[1]
On Reference Stardate 1/0805.02 (2 May 2108), Admiral Larson reinforced Federation forces in the Battle of Gamma Hydra, repulsing a Romulan armada and preventing the Romulans from gaining a foothold in the Triangle for the remainder of the war.[1]
A century later, the Larson class destroyer would be named in his honor.[1]
