Located along the Romulan Neutral Zone in Sector Z-6[1] of the Beta Quadrant,[2] Comet Icarus IV was used by the commander of a Romulan Bird of Prey for an ambush of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and the U.S.S. Farragut NCC-1647. The two Starfleet vessels were pursuing the Romulans after the Bird of Prey destroyed three outposts on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone on Stardate 1709.2. During the engagement, the Farragut, commanded by Captain James T. Kirk, was nearly destroyed, while the Enterprise, commanded by Captain Christopher Pike, and the Bird of Prey were heavily damaged, leading to a confrontation that resulted in a second war between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire.[3]
