The Federation Starship Flying Fortress was a Rickenbacker class cargo vessel. On Reference Stardate 1/6003.04 (04 March 2160), the Flying Fortress was transporting a prototype deflector shield when it was attacked by a Klingon vessel in the largest spacejacking incident to date. The Klingon vessel, which was modified to transmit a Federation scout identification signal, succeeded in a sneak attack that destroyed the Flying Fortress bridge, killing all command personnel and rendering weapons systems inoperative. Crippled and captured by the Klingons, the Flying Fortress nevertheless managed to send out an automatic distress call. A task force of five Star Fleet vessels, led by the Mann class U.S.S. Leonides under the command of Captain Pyotr Mirabella, was dispatched from Starbase 2 and intercepted the hijacked vessel as it was being towed away, forcing the Klingons to release their tractor beam and flee, while the badly damaged Flying Fortress was recovered.[1][2][3]
