As an ensign, Robert April served aboard the Einstein class U.S.S. Gates in 2217. April noted in his personal log at the time that he had grown frustrated with the inability of the class to conduct some repairs, which forced the ship to return to Starbase 9 after observing a supernova.[1]
For three years, April served as first officer aboard the Baton Rouge class U.S.S. Los Angeles.[1] He then commanded the U.S.S. Tiberius for three five-year missions,[2] after which he requested a transfer to the Starfleet Logistics Command to pursue his dream of designing a new starship class with more robust, self-sufficient capabilities.[1]
April was the first captain of the Constitution class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701,[3][4] from 2245 through 2250,[1][4] During his five years commanding the Enterprise, he fell in love with and married his ship's chief medical officer, Sarah Poole. When he was offered a promotion to commodore,[3] which would keep him on Earth, he accepted, with the expressed desire to start a family.[1] Upon his promotion was succeeded by his first officer[1][4] of the past three years,[5] Christopher Pike.[3][1][4]
