The U.S.S. Excelsior NX-2000, the first of a new class, was commissioned, incorporating many experimental systems, including the transwarp drive, earning it the nickname "The Great Experiment."[1] The pride of Federation design, the Excelsior class was a starship of the first magnitude, featuring state of the art propulsion and weapons systems.[2]
The Excelsior class boasted a crew complement of 650, five forward-firing and two rear-firing phaser banks, four forward-firing and two rear-firing torpedo launchers, with a complement of 200 photon torpedoes.
