Computers were data storage and control devices. In 2254, the Talosians accessed the computer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, and learned a great deal about Human culture and history.[1] A computer was also able to actively scan individuals, which allowed it to serve as a lie detector, much to the chagrin of Harry Mudd when he came aboard the Enterprise on Stardate 1329.1.[2]
