Edith Keeler ran the 21st Street Mission, a soup kitchen, in New York City during the Great Depression. She often spoke of a better future, in which Humans had harnessed nuclear power, built spacecraft to explore the galaxy, and solved the problems of hunger and poverty on Earth. When Starfleet Captain James T. Kirk traveled back in time to 1930, he was fascinated by Keeler, and the two unexpectedly entered into a romantic relationship before Kirk discovered that she was fated to die in a traffic accident soon thereafter. Kirk allowed the accident to happen, realizing that saving her life would dramatically alter future history, resulting in the deaths of untold billions.[1]
