Coolant was a substance used to transfer thermal energy away from one source to maintain a safe temperature. When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 attempted to escape the Fesarius's tractor beam, a display at the bridge engineering station indicated the rising temperatures of the ship's warp drive system in response to the maneuver.[1] Phaser coolant was a purple-colored gas used to cool the components of a starship phaser system, and was toxic if inhaled.[2]
