A biocomputer was a specialized computer designed for use in biology and medicine. A portable biocomputer was transported down to FGC-347601 III to assist in finding a cure to a fatal virus to which the landing party had been exposed. Its computing power was still a fraction of that available aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, and when communications were interrupted, Dr. McCoy was concerned that the machine would take hours to process its analysis, rather than the minutes it would take aboard the ship.[1]
