Fields[1] was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 as a Phaser Specialist in 2266. On Stardate 1709.2, he was on duty in the phaser control room when the Enterprise went into combat with a Romulan Bird of Prey that crossed the Neutral Zone and destroyed several Earth Outposts. During the battle, there was a toxic coolant leak; while Fields survived, his superior officer, Lieutenant Robert Tomlinson, did not.[2] When the ship visited the Tantalus V penal colony for the criminally insane on Stardate 2715.1, Fields was on Deck 14 when he notified the bridge that he had spotted Dr. Simon van Gelder, who had stowed away in a cargo container in a bid to escape.[3]
