Construction on the Federation Starship Excelsior, a Bonhomme Richard class cruiser (a variant of the Constitution class), was authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 3220[1] and commissioned circa 2194. The Excelsior and the rest of the Bonhomme Richard class saw extensive combat in the Four Years War. Following the war, all surviving ships of the class were decommissioned and destroyed in weapons tests.[2]
