Admiral Abel Niwen commanded Starfleet's Sixth Fleet in the mid-22nd century, when the first official contact was made between Humans and Tellarites on Reference Stardate 0/7308.20 (20 August 2153).[1][Notes 1] A Tellarite vessel entered the Sol system, declaring that it had been "annexed" by the United Planets of 61 Cygni.[2] With Starfleet forces streched thin patrolling the system due to the ongoing Xindi crisis,[Notes 2] Niwen chose to diplomatically welcome the vessel, warning that any hostile action would be reciprocated. The Tellarite commander accepted what he saw as a message of friendship and implied military alliance,[2] which ultimately resulted in a Tellarite presence at the first Babel Conference,[3][4][5] and Tellarites joining as founding members of both the Coalition of Planets[6][7] and the United Federation of Planets.[8] Admiral Niwen received the Medal of Honor for his efforts, and later retired from Starfleet to serve as Earth's first ambassador to Tellar Prime.[2]

Notes

  1. FASA game materials referred to events by a FASA-specific dating standard called the "Reference Stardate." All dates taken from FASA sources in this article have been adapted from that notation into standard calendar dates, which are then adjusted for errors in the baseline dates used as reference by the FASA authors. Working with a known, dated event (e.g., the launch of the Constitution class starships), the other dates in the timeline can be adjusted accordingly. FASA sources give the launch of the Constitution class as Reference Stardate 1/8801.04, which translates to the standard caldendar date of 04 January 2188. This has been established on screen, however, as occurring in 2245. As the exact month and date remain unstated in other sources, those remain the same, but the year has been adjusted to 2245, giving a modified date of 04 January 2245. This can then also be converted into the pre-TOS stardate system established in Star Trek (2009), giving us a stardate of 2245.004.
  2. The Reference Stardate given, 0/7308, originally worked out to August 2073, a mere 10 years after First Contact with Vulcans. However, Captain Archer seemed unfamiliar with his Tellarite captor's species in 2152. Adjusting the date up 80 years to 2153 placed it several months into the Xindi crisis of Enterprise's third season, and fits with the more defensive and militaristic approach to Starfleet described in the original text.
