Stardate 41416.2: Wesley Crusher takes the grueling Starfleet Academy entrance exam

As Wesley Crusher prepares to beam down to Relva VII to take his long-awaited entrance exam to Starfleet Academy, Captain Picard's old friend, Admiral Gregory Quinn, beams up for surprise business that he won't explain: a tough interrogation of the Enterprise's senior officers. Meanwhile, Wesley consoles his friend, Jake Kurland, who didn't make the final cut, and begins his grueling challenge while meeting the other candidates. A single slot is open at the Academy, and he's nervous about the infamous psych test.

Picard, along with Riker and the crew, grow increasingly bitter over the demeanor of Quinn's probing aide, Lieutenant Commander Dexter Remmick, but the admiral won't talk until he's ready. He suspects a conspiracy growing within Starfleet, and he had to test Picard's loyalty … before offering to make him the new commandant of Starfleet Academy. Picard is flattered but wants time to think it over. Wesley returns, dejected, from Relva VII: his success on the psych test gave him food for thought, but he came in a close second in the overall ratings. After consoling Wesley and saving a runaway Jake from a near-fatal shuttle crash, Picard decides to remain with the Enterprise.
