Swahili was a Human language originating[1] along the eastern coast[2] of Africa.[1] Swahili was Lieutenant Nyota Uhura's native language.[3] She was very surprised to encounter another crewman aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 who spoke Swahili, though he turned out to be an M-113 creature in disguise.[1] When Uhura lost her memories and had to be re-educated following an encounter with Nomad, she would lapse into Swahili whenever she grew frustrated with her lessons.[3] When the Melkotians communicated telepathically with the Enterprise crew, each person "heard" the message in their native language: English for Kirk, Vulcan for Spock, Russian for Chekov, and Swahili for Uhura.[4]
