On Stardate 1512.1, during a tense First Contact with the First Federation, Yeoman Janice Rand used a hand phaser to heat a pot of coffee. The boarding party sent to the Fesarius also carried Type 1 hand phasers.[1] In the 2260s, Type 1 phasers (sometimes called "Phaser 1") could be attached to a larger mounting frame that increased its capabilities, turning the unit into a Type 2 phaser (aka "Phaser 2").[2] For safety, the default setting on a phaser was stun,[3] but they were capable of vaporizing a target.[4]
