Chandley class[1]

The Chandley class frigate Niwen was manufactured by Chandley Works, Ltd., of England at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on about Reference Stardate 1/1806 (June 2276).[Notes 1] The Niwen was named for a famous Human admiral, Abel Niwen.[2]

Chandley class[2]

The Niwen quickly distinguished itself. While temporarily reassigned to Merchant Marine Command, it served as a customs interception flagship, monitoring illegal Orion slave trading activities, confiscating the ships and imprisoning the crews responsible. Following one memorable seizure, the Niwen returned several hundred slaves to Rigel. Though the mission was entirely successful and without impropriety, some of the crewmen jokingly referred to the incident as "the Green Death." The ship also served on picket duty along the Klingon and Romulan Neutral Zones, and patrolled the Talosian perimeter, enforcing General Order Seven by preventing accidental incursions by private Federation vessels.[2]

On Stardate 8347.6[2] (Reference Stardate 2/2110.16,[3] 16 October 2279), while on patrol along the Romulan Neutral Zone, the Niwen responded to a distress call originating from within the Zone. Commodore Michael A. Pollard, the ship's commander at the time, had been led to believe that the signal was coming from a clandestine Starfleet Intelligence operation by an earlier transmission from Admiral X.W. Sumers at Starbase 20. Upon arrival, however, the Niwen discovered that the base was, in fact, Romulan, and the ship was heavily damaged by a Romulan vessel and a hastily-rigged antimatter explosion designed to destroy the base. Forced to make repairs while escaping the Zone, the Niwen ultimately returned to Federation space with several Romulan survivors, now in custody.[2]

Also at this time, routine maintenance and general overhaul was completed at Starbase 20 on two of the Niwen's shuttlecraft, the Gilgamesh NCC-2306/3 and the Tiamat NCC-2306/5.[2]

Notes

  1. FASA game materials referred to events by a FASA-specific dating standard called the "Reference Stardate." All dates taken from FASA sources in this article have been adapted from that notation into standard calendar dates, which are then adjusted for errors in the baseline dates used as reference by the FASA authors. Working with a known, dated event (e.g., the launch of the Constitution class starships), the other dates in the timeline can be adjusted accordingly. FASA sources give the launch of the Constitution class as Reference Stardate 1/8801.04, which translates to the standard caldendar date of 04 January 2188. This has been established on screen, however, as occurring in 2245. As the exact month and date remain unstated in other sources, those remain the same, but the year has been adjusted to 2245, giving a modified date of 04 January 2245. This can then also be converted into the pre-TOS stardate system established in Star Trek (2009), giving us a stardate of 2245.004.
