Batteries are used to store energy for later use. When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 lost power generation from its engines during an encounter with the Talosians in 2254[1] and with the Galactic Barrier on Stardate 1312.4,[2] emergency batteries switched on to continue providing energy to artificial gravity and life support.[1]
