(The root of all realities)

Batteries were used to store energy for later use. When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 lost power generation from its engines during an encounter with the Talosians in 2254[1] and with the Galactic Barrier on Stardate 1312.4,[2] emergency batteries switched on to continue providing energy to artificial gravity and life support.[1] On Stardate 1329.1, the Enterprise was operating on battery power after having burned out its entire store of lithium crystals while rescuing Harcourt Fenton Mudd and his passengers from an asteroid field.[3]
