A sublight drive system. On Stardate 1313.1, the impulse drive on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was damaged in an enconter with the Galactic Barrier, causing the points on the drive circuits to decay almost to lead. Older impulse engines, such as those aboard the S.S. Valiant, were not strong enough to resist magnetic "space storm" phenomena, which caused that ship to be swept into the Galactic Barrier in 2069.[1]
