A trinary star system, Alpha Centauri is located 4.35 light years from the Sol system in the Alpha Centauri Sector (aka Sector 002) of the Beta Quadrant. Alpha Centauri A is a Type G2V (bright yellow dwarf) star, similar to Sol, and Alpha Centauri B is a Type K3V (orange dwarf) star. The third star, Proxima Centauri, is a Type M3V (bright red dwarf) star.[2]
Later in life, warp drive inventor Zefram Cochrane took up residence in this star system.[3] In the future altered by the premature death of Gabriel Bell, the lack of an Earth-fostered Federation left the Romulans free to expand as far as Alpha Centauri. One of its components is Proxima Centauri.[4]
