The Klingon C-9 class dreadnought was introduced in 2273 and designed for extended operations. The C-9 and nearly-identical C-8 classes were designed and put through the prototype stage at the same time, and most of the C-9s were later converted to C-8s, and some were sold to the Romulan Star Empire. Much larger than the D-7 class battlecruiser, the C-9 was intended for use along the Federation border. The C-8s and C-9s were very maneuverable and durable ships. The C-9 class had a crew complement of 620, and featured a capacity of thirteen shuttlecraft, six science labs, eight transporters, and three tractor beam emitters; it was armed with four Type-F missile launchers, four Type-4 disruptor banks, four banks of Type-1 phasers, and eight banks of Type-2 phasers. The C-9 remained in service until 2285, when it was superseded by the C-9B refit, introduced in 2279. The C-9B refit replaced its Type-F missiles with Type-As, and added a bank of Type-3 phasers; it remained in service until 2294, when it was superseded by the C-9K refit, introduced in 2292. The C-9K replaced its Type-A missiles with Type-Bs, and mounted eight banks of Type-1 phasers, four banks of Type-2 phasers, and one bank of Type-3 phasers.[1]

Romulan

When Klingon Ambassador Count Vak Kaleen convinced the Romulans to attack the Federation during the General War, part of the agreement included the delivery of a new C-9 class dreadnought in 2278. The Romulans named this ship Behemoth and converted it to their technology. It was the most powerful single unit in the Romulan Fleet until the advent of the Praetor class heavy dreadnought. The C-9R class featured a crew complement of 640, a capacity of fifteen shuttlecraft, two cargo storage units, and was equipped with six science labs, eight transporters, and three tractor beam emitters. The C-9R was armed with five torpedo tubes, with one dedicated to Type-R plasma torpedoes, two to Type-G plasma torpedoes, and two to Type-F plasma torpedoes, with twelve banks of Type-1 phasers. The C-9R remained in service until 2297, when it was superseded by the C-9RB refit, which was introduced in 2285 and replaced its Type-G torpedoes with Type-S plasma torpedoes.

A further development of the C-9R was the C-9RH heavy dreadnought, introduced in 2300. The C-9RH boasted additional phasers to increase the plasma defense and the offensive reach of the dreadnought. It could only be refitted from an existing C-9RB, of which only a few existed in the Romulan Fleet. The C-9RH was armed with the same plasma torpedo loadout as the C-9RB, as well as sixteen banks of Type-1 phasers.[1]
