The Klingon Deep Space Fleet commissioned a special study to see if the D-7 class could be made more efficient by the introduction of new technology. Of the various proposals, the one from the Kozenko Design Bureau (known by the designation KDB-1104) was the most interesting and the most radical. Smaller and easier to build than the D-7, the KDB-1104, also known as the D-5 class, was ingenious in the manner of the changes made. Frontal armament was reduced by one phaser, but the improved Type-1 phasers were used, and the disruptors were given a wider arc. The amidships phasers were considered superfluous and reduced to Type-3 phasers. Introduced in 2275, the D-5 class had a crew capacity of 400, featured a capacity of eight shuttlecraft, two science labs, three transporters, three tractor beam emitters, and was armed with two Type-A missile launchers, four banks of Type-3 disruptors, one bank of Type-1 phasers, two banks of Type-2 phasers, and six banks of Type-3 phasers. The D-5 remained in production until 2300, when it was replaced by the D-5K refit, introduced in 2288. The D-5K replaced the Type-A missiles with Type-B, and replaced the Type-2 phaser banks with Type-1s.

The D-5G war commando cruiser variant was introduced soon after in 2277; designed for use in ground assaults, it became the workhorse of the Klingon Marines. Good shielding and multiple transporters made it a dangerous ship for fast raids. Beyond the base D-5 model, the D-5G had a crew capacity of 440, featured two additional shuttles (for a total capacity of ten), five transporters, and was armed with two banks of Type-1 phasers, two banks of Type-2 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers.

Also introduced in 2277, the D-5C war command cruiser variant was designed as a squadron leader. While its command facilities were not equal to a D-7C command battlecruiser, they did not need to be. The D-5C had a crew capacity of 430, featured stronger shields than the D-5, a capacity of nine shuttlecraft, two science labs, three transporters, and four tractor beam emitters, and was armed with two Type-A missile launchers, four banks of Type-3 disruptors, two banks of Type-1 phasers, four banks of Type-2 phasers, and six banks of Type-3 phasers. The D-5C remained in service until 2295, when it was replaced by the D-5L refit, introduced in 2283. Much like the D-5K refit, the D-5L replaced the Type-A missiles with Type-Bs, and replaced the Type-2 phasers with Type-1s.

The D-5D war drone cruiser was introduced in 2279, and was designed for direct combat with missiles, rather than independent long-range bombardment. Beyond the base D-5 specifications, it featured a capacity of ten shuttlecraft, and was armed with six Type-B missile launchers, two banks of Type-1 phasers, two banks of Type-2 phasers, and six banks of Type-3 phasers.

The D-5Y war cloaking cruiser was introduced in 2281, and was the largest Klingon vessel equipped with a cloaking device. The original D-5 was a very successful spaceframe to base a light cloaking cruiser on, but it wasn't designed to carry a cloaking device, which served in the variant's detriment. Aside from the cloaking device, the D-5Y was otherwise largely identical to a base D-5.

The D-5W new heavy cruiser variant was the final variant of the class, introduced in 2294. Similar to the Federation's NCA-type Miranda class new heavy cruiser; both were light cruisers built up to heavy cruiser mass and power. The class had a capacity of 450, featured eight shuttles, two science labs, five transporters, and three tractor beam emitters; it showed an increase in overall engine power, as well as increased armaments consisting of two Type-B missile launchers, four banks of Type-3 disruptors, six banks of Type-1 phasers, two banks of Type-2 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers.

When the Klingon High Council thought that the new heavy cruisers would require a squadron flagship, the D-5WC (DWC) new heavy command cruiser variant, was the result, though only a few were produced. The additional flag command and control equipment was ultimately considered to be a waste on the design. Introduced in 2298, the D-5WC took the base D-5W and provided improved shielding, a ninth shuttle, a fourth tractor beam emitter, and the Type-2 phasers were replaced with Type-1s.[1]

Romulan

Three Romulan Sparrowhawk class light cruisers were "detained" in Klingon space in the late 2270s. After negotiations, three Klingon D-5 class war cruisers were exchanged for them in 2281. The Romulans, while initially annoyed at the exchange, found the twin Type-S plasma torpedoes on a war cruiser hull to be useful in base assaults and other situations. Unfortunately, the Romulans had difficulty maintaining the ships, which did not use the same spare parts as other Klingon ships they'd acquired, and only obtained remained a small number of them.[1]
