Mercury was the first planet from the sun in the Sol system.[3] In 2196, the Talosians downloaded the information in the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701's computers, including data on Mercury.[3] By 2/2306 (June 2223),[2] Early exploration of Mercury began in 2001, when the Mercury Rover sent back the first soil sample information from its location at the terminator. Data obtained was from both the dark and light sides of the planet.[4] Mercury was home to an extensive mining operation[1] and a shipyard. The planet was home to a population of 220 million, and was a member of the United Federation of Planets in its own right.[2]
