Founded by the Romulans, an offshoot of the Vulcans, the Romulan Star Empire was an aggressive power that fought a war with Earth in the mid-22nd century. The two powers negotiated a treaty over subspace radio, creating a Neutral Zone between them without either side ever having met face-to-face. A century later, the Empire tested the defenses of the United Federation of Planets, but the initial probe by a Bird of Prey outfitted with new cloaking and plasma torpedo technologies was defeated before it could return to Romulan space. During the incident, the secret of the Romulans' heritage was finally revealed.[1]
