T'Pring was ritually bonded to Spock as a child, when the two were seven years old, by arrangement of their families, according to Vulcan tradition. When the two had reached adulthood, Spock joined Starfleet and began to earn a degree of fame. T'Pring was uninterested in being the consort of a Starfleet officer, nor did she want to live in Spock's shadow. She had become involved with another man, Stonn, and when Spock entered pon farr in 2267, T'Pring devised a plan: she would declare kal-if-fee, the only option available under Vulcan laws and traditions, to dissolve the marriage bond. She declared Spock's Human friend, Captain James T. Kirk, as her champion in the ritual combat. If Kirk won, Spock would be dead, and she would have Stonn. If Spock won, he would again leave for Starfleet, and she would have both his lands and titles, as well as Stonn. In the end, Spock won when Dr. McCoy helped fake Kirk's death. His mind cleared of the plak tow, he agreed to dissolve the marriage bond, leaving T'Pring and Stonn with the admonition that, "you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. It is not logical, but I have often found it to be true."[1]
