First commissioned on Reference Stardate 0/9803 (June 2146), the Hopkins class, humanity's first spacefaring hospital ships, were on call. Constructed in coordination with the Interspecies Medical Exchange,[Notes 1] the hospital ships could address the medical problems of all lifeforms then known. Immediately after the declaration of the Romulan War, ships of the class were sent to support areas of the battlefront, providing medical care for injured crewmen and civilians. Later, these ships played an integral part in the new Federation's Medical Assistance Program and were dispatched to sectors or systems experiencing severe medical emergencies. The Hopkins class remained in service until 2190.[1][2]

Notes
- ↑ The original source, Star Trek: Spaceflight Chronology, has the Federation form prior to the Romulan War. To explain the cooperation of species in the design of the Hopkins class in a timeline where this was not the case, this encyclopedia has instead used the Interspecies Medical Exchange, established in Star Trek: Enterprise, as a vehicle for that early interspecies cooperation.
FASA Timeline
First commissioned on Reference Stardate 0/9803 (March 2098), the Hopkins class, the first spacefaring hospital ships, were on call in Federation charter member systems. Along with the Horizon class, these interstellar hospital ships were among the first created by and for the newly-incorporated Federation. Each member planet contributed its particular design needs, so that the hospital ships could address the medical problems of all lifeforms then known. Immediately after the declaration of the Romulan War, ships of the class were sent to support areas of the battlefront, providing medical care for injured crewmen and civilians. Later, these ships played an integral part in the Federation's Medical Assistance Program and were dispatched to sectors or systems experiencing severe medical emergencies. The Hopkins class remained in service until 2133.[1][2]
