The Imperial Starship Starbreaker, a Constellation class battlecruiser, was commanded by Captain Sorek in the early 24th Century. After responding to a distress call from the I.S.S. Gettysburg NCC-3890, which was under attack from Klingon-Cardassian Alliance vessels, the Starbreaker found itself under attack as well, the Gettysburg nowhere to be found. When Sorek planned to surrender, he was killed by Lieutenant Jean-Luc Picard, who assumed command and managed to effect the ship's escape from the ambush.[1]
Decades later in 2363, Picard had gathered a crew that boasted a number of people who were fiercely loyal to him.[2] He leveraged this loyalty with the disdain for Captain Edward Jellico in order to successfully seize control of the newly-built I.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.[3] The Stargazer, now under the command of Captain Tryla Scott, was dispatched with the I.S.S. Horatio NCC-10532 and the I.S.S. Arnold to capture or kill Picard, but the Terran ships soon found themselves surrounded by dozens of Alliance vessels.[4] The Arnold was destroyed in the ensuing battle, but the Stargazer, Horatio, and Enterprise managed to escape, buying time for Picard and his crew to devise a battle plan to rout the Alliance forces and cement Picard's position as captain of the Enterprise.[5]
