Located on the third planet[3] of four[1] in the Aldebaran system, the Aldebaran Colony[2] was a major Federation port with Class 3 facilities,[1] and boasted a population of 7.25 billion Humans as of Reference Stardate 2/2306.01 (1 June 2223).[5] Doctor Elizabeth Dehner joined the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 from the Aldebaran Colony,[2] and the Aldebaran Music Academy was located there as well.[3] Famous for its amazing variety of plant life, rare wines, and other delicacies tat could be found nowhere else in the galaxy, Aldebaran was a popular tourist attraction and vacation spot. Aldebaran also was the second-largest center of corporate holdings outside of the original boundaries of the Federation; only Arcturus surpassed it.[5]

The New Aberdeen Naval Yards,[1] located on eastern coast of Aldebaran III's primary continent,[4] were the sixth largest in the Federation[1] and a major producer of dreadnought and heavy cruiser-type vessels for Star Fleet; the ship components were assembled on the surface and ferried to a major orbital spacedock facility.[4] Aldebaran III's unspoiled wilderness was a popular tourist attraction. A small population of under one million was centered around New Aberdeen, which also had a Star Fleet supply center and several private shipyards. Native life was generally simple and consisted largely of invertebrate sea life,[4] such as the Aldebaran shell-mouth,[1] a slow-moving mollusk that existed in great numbers in the saltwater shallows, and was widely prized as a delicious menu item; it served as a staple of many seaside restaurants on the planet.[4]
In the early 24th century, Farrell Tensen served as Aldebaran's ambassador to the Federation.[4]
