April

  • RSD 0/8204: A series of meetings takes place on Vulcan, attended by delegates of the five major spacefaring governments: Earth, Vulcan, Andor, Alpha Centauri, and Tellar. This first attempt to establish a single, unifying federation fails to receive popular support of the worlds involved because the primary goals and policies of such a coalition are not adequately defined. Diplomats agree to continue working toward such a federation, now realizing that their efforts must center on defining the roles and responsibilities for the new government.[1][2]

June

  • RSD 0/8206: Tellar's G'buqoff class armed transport becomes operational. An excellent and rugged design, the class remains in service for more than nine decades. A total of 2700 will be built.[2]

  • RSD 0/8207: Earth's Cosmos class interstellar survey ship becomes operational, and begins research into nearby stars. The class, which carries a complement of 100, will remain in service until 2120, and 103 will be built.[1][2]

2083

  • RSD 0/83: The first joint Human-alien starship crews reflect an increasing interaction with extraterrestrial cultures. Captain Shu Tse Sum of the Messier class U.N.S.S. Pollux noted that a Vulcan communications officer named Supak had "superb" duty performance, and had not made a single operational mistake or oversight in his first month aboard the Pollux. Supak, however, had difficulty interacting socially with the Human crew.[1]

January

  • RSD 0/8401: Earth's Edison class interstellar research ships become operational and begin gathering new information on antimatter in the interstellar void. Carrying a complement of 58, the class will remain in service until 2139. Sixteen will be built.[1][2]

July

  • RSD 0/8407: Earth's Cavalry class destroyer becomes operational, eventually serving as a second-line ship throughout the Romulan War. A total of 100 will be built.[2]

April

  • RSD 0/8504: Earth's Assist class warp tender, with a crew of 20, is commissioned. Two hundred will be built, and the class will remain in service until 2112.[1][2]

August

  • RSD 0/8508: The "Pluto Plague," an unknown disease with an exceptionally high mortality rate, spreads through a the Pluto Research Base, killing all 200 Human and Centauran scientists. The disease is later linked to a contaminated souvenir originally obtained from an incautious Orion trader. This is the first unpleasant incident between Humans and Orions, and helps to set the tone for future relations.[1][2]

March

  • RSD 0/8703: Vulcan's Toj Lol class explorer becomes operational, eventually serving as a small research ship and diplomatic courier during the Romulan War. Ninety-one will be built.[2]

June

  • RSD 0/8706.06 (6 June): The United Federation of Planets is incorporated at the first Babel Interplanetary Conference. The original signatory powers include Earth, Alpha Centauri, Vulcan, Andor, and Tellar. Harmon Axelrod of Earth is elected as the first President of the Federation Council, serving until 2101. The goals of the new Federation include ensuring interstellar security, improving economic trade, scientific research, and galactic exploration. In conjunction with these objectives, the organization of Star Fleet Command is to be completed within the next three years, providing a unified military force for exploration and common defense. Stardates are adopted as the Federation's principal interstellar time system. The Rigel system offers to join the Federation, provided they are paid ten trillion credits "in compensation." The request is rejected, and they choose to remain outside the Federation entirely.[1][4][2][5] The Orions also maintain the secret of the existence of the Klingon Empire. The Klingons are just one of many cultures that the Orions trade with, and so go unnoticed by the Federation.[6]

  • RSD 0/88: The UFP census indicates that Earth has a population of more than ten billion, with more than eight million Humans residing in space.[1]

Wargames accident (SFC)

Wargames accident (SFC)

  • RSD 0/8909.14 (14 September): A tragic space wargames accident results in speeding up the chartering of the Federation's proposed Star Fleet Academy. Due to a misunderstood combat-simulation procedure, the U.N.S.S. Scythe was accidentally blind-sided by a small Centauran corvette, swinging the large destroyer's lasers fatally through two other Federation destroyers, the U.N.S.S. Hammer and the U.N.S.S. Enmity, with the loss of 232 lives.[1][2]

October

  • RSD 0/8910.10 (10 October): Star Fleet Command is established to replace the spacegoing forces of all member planets, with all ships redesignated as "United Space Ships" (U.S.S.). To discourage the possible misuse of military forces anywhere in space, General Order Number One is adopted as the most important regulation in Star Fleet.[2] To provide Star Fleet Command with military intelligence-gathering capabilities, Star Fleet Intelligence is created. Its Operating Forces Subdivision initially consists of Sectors 1 through 4, and the Technical Services Subdivision contains Orion Activities Units as well as supporting branches.[7]
