Reference Stardate 1/0101 through 1/0112
January
- RSD 1/0101.01 (1 January): Century Day celebrations on Luna and elsewhere throughout colonized space are interrupted with news of the destruction of three Federation heavy cruisers, presumably lost to forces associated with the unseen enemy. The U.S.S. Carronade, a Cavalry class destroyer, survives to report about the sneak attack, in which vessels painted as giant, winged creatures performed suicide runs with fusion-explosive missiles. Intercepted subspace radio transmissions from this battle are translated, finally giving the enemy a name—the Romulans. The Federation also obtains its first bearings on Romulan-held space.[1][2]
- RSD 1/0101.28 (28 January): A Romulan U-4 class cruiser engages the U.S.S. Runemark near Canis Minoris 12. The Zoenamy class corvette is destroyed, but the U-4 is believed to be damaged after the long, running battle.[2]
- RSD 1/0101 through 1/0601 (January 2101 through January 2106): Several more run-ins between Romulan and Federation forces occur, with the Federation beginning to develop some ideas on how to deal with Romulan hit-and-run tactics. On RSD 1/0507.22, two Romulan vessels are crippled by a Star Fleet strike force. The Romulan commanders wait until several ships maneuver close for grappling and boarding, then self-destruct, taking the Federation ships with them as they explode. Standing orders are issued prohibiting Federation vessels from closing with even a badly-damaged Romulan vessel.[1]
August
- RSD 1/0108.01 (1 August): A five-ship Star Fleet task force of cruisers and destroyers patrolling near Gamma Hydra surprises two Romulan U-15 class cruisers. One Romulan ship stays to fight, while the other uses the diversion to escape. The remaining cruiser is destroyed, with only slight damage to the Federation ships.[2]
October
- RSD 1/0110: The Centauri Test Range is completed, and its facilites are made available to Star Fleet Command and to the ground defense forces of every Federation member.[3][2]
