The Federation Starship Nelson was the prototype of the Nelson class scout,[1] and was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8804 (April 2245).[2] The ship was lightly armed, with only phasers and no photon torpedoes for defense. The Nelson was designed to fill the need for small, lightly armed vessels to be used by Exploration Command in areas away from known borders with potentially hostile groups. It carried three shuttlecraft, and had laboratories and exploratory/ research facilities. It usually was deployed alone, not with fleets.[1]
