The Federation Starship Saladin, a Defiant class escort, was part of a Starfleet/Klingon patrol in 2375 that engaged a Jem'Hadar task force. During the battle, Captain Shinoda was killed, and the first officer, Commander Julia Rivera assumed command. The Saladin ultimately survived the battle, but suffered significant damage, which was later repaired when the ship put in at the Bakrii shipyard.[1] During the Borg Invasion of 2380, the Saladin was one of the vessels that gathered at the Azure Nebula to defend the Federation against the Borg. When the U.S.S. Aventine NCC-82602 and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E were more than three hours overdue in reporting back from subspace tunnel twenty-two alpha, Captain Chakotay of the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 prepared to order the Saladin, the U.S.S. T'Kumbra NCC-62100, and the U.S.S. Templar through, but more than seven thousand Borg Cubes arrived through tunnel twenty-six before the ships could depart.[2]
