The Federation Starship Essex, a Constitution class vessel, was commissioned in April 2259, and refit to Mark III specifications in September 2260.[2] In May 2269, the Essex, commanded by Captain Salar and crewed entirely by Vulcans, discovered the Klingon D-7 class vessel I.K.S. Dun Da Spu in the 34 Kraol system, which was located in the Triangle border region. A Klingon landing party was attempting to alter the cultural development of the race native to the third planet, and sought to tap the world's extensive durallium deposits.[3]
The Essex was refit to Mark I of the Refit specifications in March 2276;[2] June 2282 saw a further refit, this time to the Mark III specifications. In September 2287, the Essex was transferred to Starfleet Training Command. The Essex was scrapped in January 2308.[5]
Note
The registry listed for the Essex in the "Federation Ship Recognition Manual," NCC-1719, and that established in the "Star Fleet Technical Manual," NCC-1727, conflict with the registry given in The Star Trek Encyclopedia, which was subsequently used in other media, and must be disregarded.
