Construction on the Federation Starship Ajax, a Cochise class destroyer (a variant of the Saladin class), was authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 4699[1] and commissioned circa 2190.[2]
Comet Ajax (SFC)
On Reference Stardate 1/9301 (January 2193),[3] the Ajax suffered a catastrophic matter/antimatter explosion, which vaporized the ship. What debris remained took the form of an artificial comet, which was discovered by the Kepler class U.S.S. Brahe NCC-3821. "If you ask me," reported Captain Peter Sullivan of the Brahe, "it had something to do with that new dilithium converter assembly. That's such a critical component in new starship design, and one that should have been tested more, that, well, I'm afraid we haven't seen the end of trouble from this 'miracle' crystal. … I don't believe there's ever been an artificial comet produced before; I'm only sorry it was such a tragedy that caused this one. In memory of the lost Ajax and its crew, I recommend that this new mini-comet be named after the ship."[4]
