Chekov enrolled at Star Fleet Academy in 2198. While at the Academy, he became involved with a fellow cadet, Irina Galliulin,[3] who dropped out in 2201.[1] Chekov graduated from the Academy a year later, and his first assignment was to the Monoceros class scout U.S.S. Leo Minor NCC-614, as an assistant navigator.[1]
In 2205, Chekov transferred to the Saladin class destroyer U.S.S. Shaitan NCC-519 as a navigator.[1] In 2208, Chekov transferred again, to the Constitution class cruiser U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, as navigator.[4]
