* RSD 0/9003 (March): The Star Fleet vessel U.S.S. Atmos intercepts an Orion personnel transport, the Larc. The Ruddy captain becomes the first Orion to be charged with slavery. Through an informer, the Botchok Planetary Congress discovers that the Gray guldin aboard the transport managed to sneak a missive to the Atmos, apparently in a bid for freedom. The captain, however, vaporized all the Grays to prevent their capture or interrogation. The BPC considers it a horrowing but isolated incident.

* RSD 0/9006 (June): Continued advances are made in communications theory and technology. Research leads to a level of theoretically near-perfect efficiency. From this point on, messages sent via warp radio, now known as subspace radio, travel at the unbelievable speed of Warp 15, or 3,375 times the speed of light. Over the next two years, all starships have their communications equipment modified accordingly.

* RSD 0/9101.13 (13 January): The first Federation delegation arrives at Rigel to work out amenable diplomatic and economic relations. Orion complexities and intrigues baffle them and hinder their work. The Federation begins working to give the Botchok Planetary Congress "legitimacy." Publicly, they are very popular, but the BPC receives an unpleasant shock when it intercepts the delegation's dispatches and learns that it is considered "quaint, disorganized, and of unknown political importance in spite of their claims." Lieutenant Kathleen Wenzel becomes the first Federation member to meet Rigellians on Rigel IV.

* RSD 0/92: The U.S.S. Muleskinner, an ore carrier, is spacejacked by pirates. Later, it is discovered that this was the first Romulan criminal act against the Federation. As a result, appropriations for Star Fleet Command are greatly increased.

* RSD 0/9204 (April): The Vanguard class transport is commissioned. It is the largest transport ship of the 21st century and serves as Star Fleet Materiel Command's primary multipurpose starship in the early years of the Federation and during the Romulan War. Its side-loading bays and adaptable cargo interior make for ready accommodation of different payloads, from small craft to raw ore to nearly 1000 passengers. Later models will be uprated to keep pace with advances in warp technology, and the class will remain in service until 2128. Just under 1600 will eventually be constructed for military and commercial use.
* RSD 0/92: The Vanguard class transport is commissioned. It is the largest commercial/industrial ship of the 21st century and serves as the primary multipurpose starship in the early years of the Federation. Its side-loading bays and adaptable cargo interior make for ready accommodation of different payloads, from small craft to raw ore to nearly 1000 passengers. * RSD 0/9211.03 (3 November): The Romulan Star Empire makes first contact with the United Federation of Planets when a Federation cargo ship, the S.S. Atlas, wanders into Romulan territory and is destroyed by Romulan patrol craft. At first, the Romulans suspect that Federation incursions into their space may be a Klingon deception. Later, the Imperial Council, remembering the "Klingon lesson," decides not to risk negotiation with the Federation, in the hope that the destruction of all intruders will keep them from expanding into Romulan space.
 +
* RSD 0/9211.17 (17 November): The Federation cargo vessel U.S.S. Atlas is listed as missing after failing to arrive as scheduled at the Sector 5D Agricultural Colony. First thought to have been attacked by unknown pirates, it is later discovered that this was the first Romulan attack against the Federation. As a result, appropriations for Star Fleet Command will be greatly increased.

* RSD 0/9302.21 (21 February): The recorder/marker buoy from the lost cargo vessel Atlas is recovered by Star Fleet. Recordings from the buoy reveal that the ship was not lost in space, but was fired upon by enemy aliens of unknown origin. Intercepted subspace radio transmissions are included, giving the UFP the first recordings of the Romulan language. Video depicts the second pass of the alien ship, painted like a gigantic bird. The captain of the Atlas reports his drive is inoperative and his shields failing as the enemy vessel rounds for another run; he also reports his intention to release the buoy before the Atlas can be attacked again.
 +
* RSD 0/9305.27 (27 May): The U.S.S. Mol Ask'nnar, a frigate of Tellarite design patrolling near the Federation border, fails to make a scheduled rendezvous. A massive search effort is made by available Star Fleet vessels, but the ship is never found and is recorded as "lost, whereabouts unknown." Although never proven, circumstantial evidence later points to foul play at the hands of the Romulans.
 +
* RSD 0/9309 (September): The Human-designed Liberty class picket cruiser, equipped only with sublight drive, is removed from active service. From this point on, it is used exclusively as a planetary system defense boat.
 +
* RSD 0/9310 (October): Originating from an Earth-inspired design, the Horizon class, the first Federation-built ships, enter service. This is the first class of warship to be jointly designed and constructed by engineers from several member systems of the UFP. It is also the first class to be equipped with the new quasi-nuclear photon-neutron torpedoes. An excellent design, it will serve with Star Fleet's front-line units for decades. More than 1300 will be built, and the class will remain in service until 2140.
 +
* RSD 0/9310.18 (18 October): The S.S. Amaretto, operating within Federation-patrolled territory, is attacked by two starships of unknown configuration. The vessels are similar to those from the logs of the Atlas. The freighter is severely damaged, but the attackers break off when a Federation four-ship destroyer squadron appears. The Star Fleet Command flagship attempts to establish communication for purposes of identification and explanation, but the alien vessels either fail to understand or ignore all efforts to communicate, and they successfully evade their pursuers.

* RSD 0/9402.13 (13 February): The Delta VII outpost is destroyed, apparently by pirates. Years later, it will be discovered that this was another Romulan attack.
 +
* RSD 0/9411 (November): A total of 32 unarmed, warp-driven message probes are launched toward areas of uncharted space from starships and planets near Delta VII. Each probe contains complete symbolic instructions and messages in every known language. The messages request the establishment of diplomatic relations and the resolution of any existing dispute via peaceful means. No probe is ever discovered, and all are assumed to be lost or destroyed by the "pirates."

* RSD 0/9507.8 (8 July): Star Fleet Engineering Command's first major construction project culminates with the activation of Starbase 1, under the command of Commodore Felix Pjindik. This is the first major artificial construction, repair, and service facility built for Star Fleet Command.
 +
* RSD 0/9509 (September): The Franklin series warp drive message probe is removed from service.
 +
* RSD 0/9510.21 (21 October): A number of very small, automatked starship-detection probes set up in Sector 7L (near the area of attacks) are destroyed. The Verne class cruiser U.S.S. Marconi, responsible for patrolling the sector, is unable to respond in time to pursue the attacking ships.
 +
* RSD 0/9511.30 (30 November): As a result of the losses of the U.S.S. Atlas and the Delta VII outpost, the Federation Council passes a directive to Star Fleet Command. In addition to new, massive appropriations for fleet construction, the directive orders several cruiser formations be redeployed to strengthen defenses in the area where the Atlas was lost. A special scout squadron under the jurisdiction of Star Fleet Intelligence Command is dispatched to obtain any information on the apparent pirates and, if possible, to make diplomatic contact. The squadron consists of twelve deep-space patrol craft, each manned by fifteen volunteers. None return.
 +
* RSD 0/9512 (December): In view of recent conditions, the Verne class cruiser is removed from active service. Though well armed, the vessel is only capable of Warp 2.7, and so has proven inadequate for patrol and pursuit duties along the now-disputed frontier.

+
* RSD 0/9604 (April): Star Fleet Command's Arrow and Galliant class short-range starfighters enters service. These vessels are extremely maneuverable at sublight speeds, but are only armed with light weaponry. They are designed to be used at the new starbases for local defense and interception duties. Assigned in squadrons of 21, a total of 315 will be built.
 +
* RSD 0/9604 (April): Andor's Taholsin class destroyer enters service with Star Fleet Command. Over the next 14 years, a total of 1,030 will be constructed for Star Fleet.
 +
* RSD 0/9606 (June): Star Fleet engineers working at the still-unfinished Centauri Test Range begin an intensive program to develop more efficient laser weapons systems for Federation warships.
 +
* RSD 0/9612 (December): Massive engineering and construction efforts are begun on several dozen habitable planets, including several in the area where shipping recently has been attacked. Using available resources and technical information transmitted by subspace radio, complete starship-building facilities are built in only a few months. These industrial complexes permit the manufacture of the most recent warship designs for immediate service. Thus, a few of the newest ships can see service in a matter of weeks. Frontier squadrons no longer have to wait years for the arrival of starships from Terran, Andorian, or Centauran shipyards.
 +
* RSD 0/9612 (December): Starbase 2 is completed and assumes operational status.

* RSD 0/97: The first spacefaring hospital ships, the Hopkins class, are on call in Federation charter member systems. Along with the Horizon class, these interstellar hospital ships are among the first created by and for the newly-incorporated Federation. Each member planet contributed its particular design needs, so that the hospital ships could address the medical problems of all lifeforms then known. Later, these ships will play an integral part in the Federation's Medical Assistance Program and will be dispatched to sectors or systems experiencing severe medical emergencies. The Hopkins class will remain in service until 2133.
+
* RSD 0/9706.09 (9 June): In a skillful tactic executed near Epsilon XII, a Federation anti-piracy cruiser task force catches a pirate cruiser by surprise and englobes it, attempting to establish contact. The alien ship forces combat, and then explodes after a single salvo hits it. There are no survivors or remains from the pirate ship, and the Federation forces suffer no casualties from the explosion.
 +
* RSD 0/9707.30 (30 July): An attack on Federation probes, similar to the one on Reference Stardate 0/9510, occurs in Sector 5K. This time, the pirate vessels remain in the area until the patrolling ships, two Degbaxis class frigates, arrive. One frigate is crippled and the second is forced to retreat before the three attacking cruisers break off their attack. Unmolested, they achieve warp speed and depart, presumably to return to their base.
 +
* RSD 0/9708 (August): Starbase 3 is completed and assumes operational status. This base is used as the primary command headquarters for Star Fleet Operations during the Romulan War. Its (relatively) great distance from the front makes command, control, and communications protocols difficult to execute efficiently. For this reason, many Star Fleet squadron and group commanders are able to exert enormous personal authority, responsibility, and initiative while fighting the war.

Along with the Horizon class, these interstellar hospital ships are among the first created by and for the newly-incorporated Federation. Each member planet contributed its particular design needs, so that the hospital ships could address the medical problems of all lifeforms then known. Immediately after the declaration of war, ships of the class will be sent to support areas of the battlefront, providing medical care for injured crewmen and civilians. Later, these ships will play an integral part in the Federation's Medical Assistance Program and will be dispatched to sectors or systems experiencing severe medical emergencies. The Hopkins class will remain in service until 2133.

* RSD 0/9806 (June): The MD-1000 class space dock is removed from service, having served its purpose well before becoming obsolete.
 +
* RSD 0/9807.27 (27 July): An unescorted group of six Zeus class warp-driven automated transports is attacked while traveling in Sector 7C, again near the disputed frontier. All six are crippled, and most of the tritanium carried aboard them is missing when the ships are finally located.

* RSD 0/9902 (February): Andor's Thofsin class cruiser enters service with Star Fleet Command. Over the next 18 years, a total of 415 will be constructed.
 +
* RSD 0/9905 (May): Starbase 5 is completed and assumes operational status. The completion of the base marks the end of the first major phase of starbase construction. After this time, the Federation cuts appropriations for similar bases, placing greater emphasis on new starship construction.
 +
* RSD 0/9905.04 (4 May): In the worst incidence of "piracy" yet, the commercial passenger liner S.S. Diana is attacked. Nearly 600 passengers and crew are killed and the cargo is found to be missing. The remains are discovered by the Messier class U.S.S. Intrepid, under the command of Captain Henry McKenna. Within weeks, the "Diana Lives! Foundation" is established so that people do not forget the tragedy of the ship's loss.
 +
* RSD 0/9906 (June): Andor's Tanathooef class frigate enters service with Star Fleet Command. Over the next 16 years, a total of 530 will be constructed for use by Star Fleet.
 +
* RSD 0/9907.29 (29 July): An escorted convoy of Vanguard class transports from the Raman system is attacked by two unidentified cruisers. Most of the Federation transports and escort vessels are destroyed or severely damaged, with no losses taken by the attackers. Running battles between Star Fleet and pirate forces become increasingly common over the next six years.

Prev: 2080s FASA Chronology Next: 2100
Reference Stardate 0/9001 through 0/9912

2090

 • RSD 0/90: The United Federation of Planets Patent Office is established to provide scientists, engineers, and inventors of all member planets galactic protection for their work.[1]
 • RSD 0/9003 (March): The Star Fleet vessel U.S.S. The BPC considers it a horrowing but isolated incident.[2]
 • RSD 0/9006 (June): Continued advances are made in communications theory and technology. Research leads to a level of theoretically near-perfect efficiency. From this point on, messages sent via warp radio, now known as subspace radio, travel at the unbelievable speed of Warp 15, or 3,375 times the speed of light. Over the next two years, all starships have their communications equipment modified accordingly.[3]

2091

 • RSD 0/91: The bone-setting laser is perfected.[1]
 • RSD 0/9101.13 (13 January): The first Federation delegation arrives at Rigel to work out amenable diplomatic and economic relations. Orion complexities and intrigues baffle them and hinder their work. The Federation begins working to give the Botchok Planetary Congress "legitimacy."[4] Publicly, they are very popular, but the BPC receives an unpleasant shock when it intercepts the delegation's dispatches and learns that it is considered "quaint, disorganized, and of unknown political importance in spite of their claims." Lieutenant Kathleen Wenzel becomes the first Federation member to meet Rigellians on Rigel IV.[2]
 • RSD 0/9109.19 (19 September): Star Fleet Academy opens on Alpha Centauri with a class of 300 students, representing eight different races. The first commandant is Stavros Niarchos.[1][3][5]

2092

 • RSD 0/9204 (April): The Vanguard class transport is commissioned. Just under 1600 will eventually be constructed for military and commercial use.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9211.03 (3 November): The Romulan Star Empire makes first contact with the United Federation of Planets when a Federation cargo ship, the S.S. Atlas, wanders into Romulan territory and is destroyed by Romulan patrol craft. At first, the Romulans suspect that Federation incursions into their space may be a Klingon deception. Later, the Imperial Council, remembering the "Klingon lesson," decides not to risk negotiation with the Federation, in the hope that the destruction of all intruders will keep them from expanding into Romulan space.[6][3]
 • RSD 0/9211.17 (17 November): The Federation cargo vessel U.S.S. Atlas is listed as missing after failing to arrive as scheduled at the Sector 5D Agricultural Colony. First thought to have been attacked by unknown pirates, it is later discovered that this was the first Romulan attack against the Federation. As a result, appropriations for Star Fleet Command will be greatly increased.[1][7][8][3]

2093

 • RSD 0/9302.21 (21 February): The recorder/marker buoy from the lost cargo vessel Atlas is recovered by Star Fleet. The captain of the Atlas reports his drive is inoperative and his shields failing as the enemy vessel rounds for another run; he also reports his intention to release the buoy before the Atlas can be attacked again.[8]
 • RSD 0/9305.27 (27 May): The U.S.S. Mol Ask'nnar, a frigate of Tellarite design patrolling near the Federation border, fails to make a scheduled rendezvous. A massive search effort is made by available Star Fleet vessels, but the ship is never found and is recorded as "lost, whereabouts unknown." Although never proven, circumstantial evidence later points to foul play at the hands of the Romulans.[3]
 • RSD 0/9309 (September): The Human-designed Liberty class picket cruiser, equipped only with sublight drive, is removed from active service. From this point on, it is used exclusively as a planetary system defense boat.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9310 (October): Originating from an Earth-inspired design, the Horizon class, the first Federation-built ships, enter service. This is the first class of warship to be jointly designed and constructed by engineers from several member systems of the UFP. It is also the first class to be equipped with the new quasi-nuclear photon-neutron torpedoes. An excellent design, it will serve with Star Fleet's front-line units for decades. More than 1300 will be built, and the class will remain in service until 2140.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9310.18 (18 October): The S.S. Amaretto, operating within Federation-patrolled territory, is attacked by two starships of unknown configuration. The vessels are similar to those from the logs of the Atlas. The freighter is severely damaged, but the attackers break off when a Federation four-ship destroyer squadron appears. The Star Fleet Command flagship attempts to establish communication for purposes of identification and explanation, but the alien vessels either fail to understand or ignore all efforts to communicate, and they successfully evade their pursuers.[3]

2094

 • RSD 0/9402.13 (13 February): The Delta VII outpost is destroyed, apparently by pirates. Years later, it will be discovered that this was another Romulan attack.[1]
 • RSD 0/9411 (November): A total of 32 unarmed, warp-driven message probes are launched toward areas of uncharted space from starships and planets near Delta VII. Each probe contains complete symbolic instructions and messages in every known language. The messages request the establishment of diplomatic relations and the resolution of any existing dispute via peaceful means. No probe is ever discovered, and all are assumed to be lost or destroyed by the "pirates."[3]

2095

 • RSD 0/95: Edward Abramson, a brilliant physicist and the developer of transtator physics, is born.[1]
 • RSD 0/9507.8 (8 July): Star Fleet Engineering Command's first major construction project culminates with the activation of Starbase 1, under the command of Commodore Felix Pjindik. This is the first major artificial construction, repair, and service facility built for Star Fleet Command.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9509 (September): The Franklin series warp drive message probe is removed from service.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9510.21 (21 October): A number of very small, automatked starship-detection probes set up in Sector 7L (near the area of attacks) are destroyed. The Verne class cruiser U.S.S. Marconi, responsible for patrolling the sector, is unable to respond in time to pursue the attacking ships.[3]
 • RSD 0/9511.30 (30 November): As a result of the losses of the U.S.S. None return.[8][3]
 • RSD 0/9512 (December): In view of recent conditions, the Verne class cruiser is removed from active service. Though well armed, the vessel is only capable of Warp 2.7, and so has proven inadequate for patrol and pursuit duties along the now-disputed frontier.[3]

2096

 • RSD 0/9604 (April): Star Fleet Command's Arrow and Galliant class short-range starfighters enters service. These vessels are extremely maneuverable at sublight speeds, but are only armed with light weaponry. They are designed to be used at the new starbases for local defense and interception duties. Assigned in squadrons of 21, a total of 315 will be built.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9604 (April): Andor's Taholsin class destroyer enters service with Star Fleet Command. Over the next 14 years, a total of 1,030 will be constructed for Star Fleet.[3]
 • RSD 0/9606 (June): Star Fleet engineers working at the still-unfinished Centauri Test Range begin an intensive program to develop more efficient laser weapons systems for Federation warships.[3]
 • RSD 0/9612 (December): Massive engineering and construction efforts are begun on several dozen habitable planets, including several in the area where shipping recently has been attacked. Using available resources and technical information transmitted by subspace radio, complete starship-building facilities are built in only a few months. These industrial complexes permit the manufacture of the most recent warship designs for immediate service. Thus, a few of the newest ships can see service in a matter of weeks. Frontier squadrons no longer have to wait years for the arrival of starships from Terran, Andorian, or Centauran shipyards.[3]
 • RSD 0/9612 (December): Starbase 2 is completed and assumes operational status.[3]

2097

 • RSD 0/97: The U.S.S. Archon is lost on an exploration mission near Beta III.[1]
 • RSD 0/9706.09 (9 June): In a skillful tactic executed near Epsilon XII, a Federation anti-piracy cruiser task force catches a pirate cruiser by surprise and englobes it, attempting to establish contact. The alien ship forces combat, and then explodes after a single salvo hits it. There are no survivors or remains from the pirate ship, and the Federation forces suffer no casualties from the explosion.[3]
 • RSD 0/9707.30 (30 July): An attack on Federation probes, similar to the one on Reference Stardate 0/9510, occurs in Sector 5K. This time, the pirate vessels remain in the area until the patrolling ships, two Degbaxis class frigates, arrive. One frigate is crippled and the second is forced to retreat before the three attacking cruisers break off their attack. Unmolested, they achieve warp speed and depart, presumably to return to their base.[3]
 • RSD 0/9708 (August): Starbase 3 is completed and assumes operational status. This base is used as the primary command headquarters for Star Fleet Operations during the Romulan War. Its (relatively) great distance from the front makes command, control, and communications protocols difficult to execute efficiently. For this reason, many Star Fleet squadron and group commanders are able to exert enormous personal authority, responsibility, and initiative while fighting the war.[3]

2098

 • RSD 0/98: Increased Star Fleet construction programs brings for the Manta class "space tank." This small yet powerful vessel has a tremendous offensive capability.[1]
 • RSD 0/98: A small-scale student exchange program begins among several UFP members.[1]
 • RSD 0/9803: The first spacefaring hospital ships, the Hopkins class, are on call in Federation charter member systems. The Hopkins class will remain in service until 2133.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9806 (June): The MD-1000 class space dock is removed from service, having served its purpose well before becoming obsolete.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9807.27 (27 July): An unescorted group of six Zeus class warp-driven automated transports is attacked while traveling in Sector 7C, again near the disputed frontier. All six are crippled, and most of the tritanium carried aboard them is missing when the ships are finally located.[3]
 • RSD 0/9808 (August): Starbase 4 is completed and assumes operational status.[3]

2099

 • RSD 0/9902 (February): Andor's Thofsin class cruiser enters service with Star Fleet Command. Over the next 18 years, a total of 415 will be constructed.[3]
 • RSD 0/9905 (May): Starbase 5 is completed and assumes operational status. The completion of the base marks the end of the first major phase of starbase construction. After this time, the Federation cuts appropriations for similar bases, placing greater emphasis on new starship construction.[3]
 • RSD 0/9905.04 (4 May): In the worst incidence of "piracy" yet, the commercial passenger liner S.S. Diana is attacked. Nearly 600 passengers and crew are killed and the cargo is found to be missing. The remains are discovered by the Messier class U.S.S. Intrepid, under the command of Captain Henry McKenna. Within weeks, the "Diana Lives! Foundation" is established so that people do not forget the tragedy of the ship's loss.[1][3]
 • RSD 0/9906 (June): Andor's Tanathooef class frigate enters service with Star Fleet Command. Over the next 16 years, a total of 530 will be constructed for use by Star Fleet.[3]
 • RSD 0/9907.29 (29 July): An escorted convoy of Vanguard class transports from the Raman system is attacked by two unidentified cruisers. Most of the Federation transports and escort vessels are destroyed or severely damaged, with no losses taken by the attackers. Running battles between Star Fleet and pirate forces become increasingly common over the next six years.[3]
