• Stardate 5027.3/Reference Stardate 2/1002: (approx. 10 March): The Enterprise participates in a Starfleet Intelligence operation to seize a prototype of a new Romulan cloaking device. The Enterprise escapes with both the device and confirmation of a Klingon/Romulan technological agreement. The device works once while escaping from the Romulan Neutral Zone, but later fails to function when detached from the Enterprise. The mechanism is examined and duplicated by Federation scientists, but the prototype later fails in a particularly nasty fashion, and research and development aimed toward making cloaking devices operational on Federation ships is eventually halted. • Stardate 5476.3 (approx. 25 July): As Dr. McCoy discovers he is dying of an incurable disease, the crew of the Enterprise rush to stop an asteroid from colliding with a Federation world, only to discover that the asteroid is, in fact, a disguised alien vessel. They find an entire civilization living in the ship who believe they are actually on a planet, and a dictatorial "Oracle" who forbids any attempt to discover the truth. Using the stardate given in "Charlie X" (1533.1), coupled with the calendar date given in that episode ("Thanksgiving," which falls on 23 November in 2265), a range of stardates for 2268 was devised: 4794-5999, which results in 3.29 stardates per 24 hours. Using this range as a guide, the following ranges were calculated per month for 2268:
