- Stardate 57436.2: Ensign Tendi has her first day aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, where she meets her fellow crew members, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, and Rutherford. Meanwhile, Boimler is tasked with a secret special assignment, and Rutherford attempts to keep his dating life intact while a disaster strikes the ship.[1]

- A supernova destroys Romulus and Remus. Ambassador Spock pilots the Jellyfish in an attempt to use red matter to prevent the destruction, but is too late to save the Romulan and Reman homeworlds. He is pursued by Nero, a Romulan survivor who commands a mining vessel, the Narada, and both ships are pulled into the quantum singularity generated by the red matter detonation and presumed lost. In reality, they are sent back in time, and the Kelvin Timeline is created when Nero destroys the U.S.S. Kelvin NCC-0514 in 2233, then Vulcan in 2258, irreparably altering the timeline.[2]
