A fine example of advancement in the Terran Empire's Starfleet was Captain James T. Kirk, commanding officer of the I.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.[1]

While on a landing party, Kirk discovered the Tantalus Device, which allowed its operator to remotely vaporize a target, in the looted laboratory of a dying alien scientist. Kirk used the device to kill Captain Christopher Pike and assumed command of the Enterprise with Spock as his first officer. Kirk went on to use the Tantalus Device to make his adversaries disappear under mysterious circumstances. His first act as captain was to suppress an uprising on the Gorlan homeworld, by destroying the planet. Next, he executed 5000 colonists on Vega IX in order to force a retraction of their secession from the empire.[1]

In 2266, a freak transporter accident caused him to temporarily trade places with his counterpart from another universe.[1] Some time after his return to his own reality, Kirk was killed by Spock, who used the Tantalus Device to seize power.[2]
